Okay, so which stars are coming back?
After the original announcement that the show would be renewed, a couple of the show's biggest stars took to social media to share their excitement.
- Law and Order: Special Victims Unit wouldn’t be entering its record-breaking 21st season if it weren’t a major television hit. The crime drama headed up by Mariska Hargitay has been dominating NBC since its debut in 1999, and has no plans of slowing down. Of course, part of the reason it’s so popular is due to its star-studded cast.
- Season 20 of ‘Law & Order: SVU’ premiered on September 27, 2018, and is slated to run till May 23, 2019.
'20 years ago, we started a conversation. We're not finished,' Mariska Hargitay, who's played Olivia Benson since the very first episode, said on Twitter. 'I'm profoundly proud of how far we've come. Prouder still of how far we'll go. We've all broken this ground together.'
Her co-star Ice-T, who portrays Fin Tutuola, also tweeted his thoughts. 'SVU has been OFFICIALLY picked up for season #21. Making us the longest running drama in Television History! Respect to the man Dick Wolf and all my past and present Cast and Crew! And definitely ALL the fans!' he wrote.

— ICE T (@FINALLEVEL) March 29, 2019So yes, both Mariska and ICE-T will be returning to the small screens this fall. Another big name Peter Scanavino, who plays Dominick Carisi Jr., will also be back. He recently revealed what he thinks about the latest episodes. 'On my way to work, and I couldn’t be happier about the way @nbcsvu #svu21 is shaping up! EVERYBODY is bringing it this year,' he tweeted.
Unfortunately, Philip Winchester, who played Peter Stone, will not join the cast this fall.
So, what can we expect from this season?
We're not sure exactly what the new season will entail, but judging from recent comments made from Mariska herself, it's bound to be a must-watch.
Although the actress has starred on the series for years, she says she's still 'excited' for the future, especially since she started producing and directing. 'I feel so newly challenged and inspired and excited, which just surprises me,' Mariska told People.

And for viewers who are concerned the 55-year-old might bid adieu to her character—it doesn't look like Mariska is leaving anytime soon. In fact, she's even still learning on set!
'With all the new things that I’ve learned, I go, 'I can’t leave the show,' she said.

Yes, decades on TV is a quite a while, but life-long fans (ahem, me) are surely not surprised at its continued success. Since its inception in 1999, the procedural has won numerous accolades—with several handed to Mariska, including an Emmy Award and a Golden Globe Award—and consistently receives high ratings. The countdown is on for season 21!
